Preparing your face before Makeup

Your face is a canvas and it is so important to take care of your face on a daily basis. Preparing your face before applying your makeup is a very important step to having a perfect look. So here are a few steps that I find that help me get the look I love.

6 Steps To Prepare Your Face Before Applying Makeup

1. Cleanser

Wash your face with lukewarm water. Use a soft and mild cleanser to help you even out your skin tone. This will further help make your skin smoother.

2. Exfoliator

You don’t want your makeup to look cakey, do you? So get rid of the main culprit for this beauty disaster – dead skin cells! Exfoliating means uncovering the new smooth skin beneath.

3. Toner or Serum

Once you have exfoliated your skin well, apply a toner or serum and wait for a few seconds for it to dry. Toner is useful for those with extremely oily skin, while serum works wonderfully for those with dry skin as it hydrates the face. This is a step that we often tend to skip but is an important one.

4. Eye Cream

Did you think this step was not important? Think again because this step comes even before your moisturizer. Much like serums, your eye cream is expected to be thin. It helps to moisturize and even out the skin tone around your eyes so that you look more awake. The area around your skin is fragile and thin so make sure you put your eye cream correctly to even out uneven skin tone.

5. Moisturizer

This step is non-negotiable — whether your skin is oily or dry. Before applying makeup you will want to use a light moisturizer to not make the base oily. Make sure you use a moisturizer that suits your skin-type, and offers an all-day hydration. One way to apply it is to press the moisturizer on to your skin instead of rubbing it in. This will allow the solution to properly seep into your skin and stimulate your skin cells..

6. Primer

Primer acts as a protective barrier that prevents your moisturizer and skin’s oil balance from mixing with your makeup. Primer sets the base for a flawless makeup application. Primer also acts as a barrier to fill in any lines in your skin so that makeup does not crease in them.

Pro Tips and Tricks for the best looking lips

Everyone's lips are different, but we all want them to look the same, gorgeous!  Here are a few ideas that you can use to make your lips look like they belong on the runway!

Step 1: Conceal your lips

Cover your lips with either foundation or concealer to brighten and highlight the lip line. Adding layers of light around the lips will make lips appear fuller. This also doubles as a good primer for lipstick.

Step 2: 'Underline’

Firstly make sure your lip liner is sharpened before you use it, this will help with creating more precise lines. Line the lip from the underneath to create a shadow.

Step 3: 'Overline'

Using the same liner, overline the natural line of the bow. Use a colour that best matches your natural lip tone. Next, use a cotton bud or your finger to blend out the lines, softening the lip line for a natural effect.

Step 4: Choose your nude

Fill in your lips with a nude lipstick. A nude colour slightly lighter than your natural lip tone will create the illusion of your lips being bigger.

Step 5: Highlight the center

Apply a gloss to the centre of the lips to add light. The iridescent sheen from a glossy high shine product will help lips look instantly fuller. This is a great tip for enhancing what you already have.

How to find your perfect nude

Finding the perfect nude lip colour that works for both your skin tone and your natural lip colour can be challenging. "I tend to look for a lip colour similar to the natural tone of your lips with a slightly more intense colour but not far from your natural tone" Sarah-Jane explains, with these rules.

If your lips are pale:

"If your lips are pale you should go for cream, sandy or even a pale pink nude. Paler skins tend to look better wearing nude colours with more of a pinky undertone as brown nudes can wash you out."

If your lips are pinky/rosy:

"If you have a medium lip tone which is pinky, then I recommend you go for a brown nude or even a slightly darker rosy nude. Medium skin tones can opt for a pinky nude, slightly more neutral but with a hint of pink."

If your lips are darker:

"If you are slightly darker skinned and your lips are naturally quite dark I would go for a darker, more beige nude. A nude with a red/orange undertone can look beautiful. Olive skins can go for a real beige nude –perfect on tan skins."

Lipstick Pro tips

I love all kinds of lipstick and lipgloss! I think that completes the whole look. But getting that look takes a little work. Everyone wants that model look. So here is what I found that keeps my lips looking great.

Step 1: Prepare Your Lips

Gently go over your lips with a soft toothbrush to remove any rough or loose skin.

When applying moisturizer to your face, massage a little into your lips too. Don't, however, use lip balm, since this would impair the indelibility of your lip makeup.

Step 2: Apply Foundation or Lip Primer

The best base for lipstick is foundation. It's full of moisturizing agents, it evens out lip color, helps lipstick stay on longer, and prevents color changes during hot weather—heat causes the pigment to separate from the base substances.

Products sold specifically as "lip primer" are only useful if you're not wearing foundation.

You may find it difficult to find a lip liner that matches peach, apricot or coral toned lipsticks, but an eyebrow pencil in a light, warm brown also does the job.

Step 3: Apply Lip Liner

Apart from defining the shape of your lips, lip liner also keeps your lipstick from feathering or "bleeding." If you look closely, you'll see that your lips have a natural white contour. Use this as a guide when you apply lip liner. It doesn’t matter in which direction you apply—whether from left to right, right to left, or corner to center—as long as you apply accurately.

Your lip liner should be the exact same color as your lipstick. You may find it difficult to find one that matches peach, apricot, or coral tones, but an eyebrow pencil in a light, warm brown also does the job.

For sanitary reasons, and to ensure that it draws a defined, long lasting outline, make sure your lip liner pencil is always sharpened.

Step 4: Powder Your Lip Liner

A light dusting of powder gives lip liner extra staying power.

Pick up a tiny amount of loose translucent powder with a cotton pad, curl it around your middle finger and press it against the back of your hand to remove excess, then carefully roll it over your lip liner. Don’t apply too much, otherwise your lip liner will appear blurred.

Step 5: Apply Lipstick

Your lipstick should cover your lip liner exactly. For accuracy, apply with a lip brush. This gives a more even and precise application than directly from the tube, and helps lipstick to stay on longer.

Once you've applied a first coat, blot with a cosmetic tissue, then add a second coat and blot again. Layering in this way makes it last longer.

Always be sure to blot your lips before adding lip gloss, too.
